Cockroaches, the pest that can harm you intensely.

Cockroaches are mostly invisible to human eyes. Yet they infest your houses by such a huge number that may make you feel dizzy. They are everywhere, in your kitchen sink, the drainpipes, behind the walls of your house, in your food and drinking water, in your store, you name it, and you will find it there.

Cockroaches are considered to be dangerous as an allergen source and asthma trigger. They may also carry certain bacteria that can cause illnesses if left on food. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cockroaches are “unhygienic scavengers in human settlements.

In addition to these proteins, cockroaches can carry some serious diseases. salmonella typhi, which causes typhoid, has been found in cockroaches, as has poliomyelitis, which causes polio.

Cockroaches can also cause dysentery, a disease that causes severe diarrhoea.

Two common types of cockroach in our area include the American cockroach and the German cockroach. American cockroaches are the largest house-infesting cockroach and can grow to be as long as 3 inches. They are a reddish brown with a yellow figure 8 pattern on their head.

Cockroaches are equal-opportunity invaders. These nuisances can establish themselves wherever they can find reliable sources of food, water and shelter. Unfortunately, people’s homes are one of the major suppliers of all three of these cockroach necessities.

Cockroaches are not the most sanitary insects. They feed on garbage, breed in sewage and lay waste all over your kitchen counter. One look at their daily habits may have you wondering, “Are cockroaches harmful?”

Along with professional extermination, you can reduce the cockroach population in your home by limiting their access to water, food, and shelter:

  • seal entry points such as cracks in floors and walls
  • fix leaky pipes.
  • keep typically damp areas dry.
  • use cockroach traps and bait.
  • tightly cover all trash containers
  • store food in airtight containers (including food in cabinets)
  • clean dirty dishes immediately after use
  • clean pet food bowl (do not leave pet food out)
  • sweep up food crumbs from tables, counters, stovetop, and floors.
  • wipe up spills immediately.
  • vacuum and mop floors regularly
  • clean (at least annually) around and under furniture that is rarely moved.
