What is a termite?
Termites are insects and it is both Subterranean and Terranean in nature. Subterranean termites are insects that feed on wood, frequently becoming pests of homes. There are two types of termites commonly encountered by homeowners: the worker and the swarmer. Worker termites are creamy coloured, 3-4 mm long, and typically only seen when a mud foraging tube is broken, or infested wood is broken open. Swarmers are the reproductive cast of the termite colony. They are approximately 4 mm long and dark brown or black in colour. They may or may not have wings, as the swarmer lose their wings shortly after emergence.
Subterranean termite workers can be found year-round, though swarmers are usually encountered between the months of March through April.
How can a termite damage your property or house?
Termites can cause damage to the structural wood of your house as well as in areas around your windows and doors. Serious infestations can even lead to damage inside the walls of your home and to the wood furniture inside. This includes the wood under your house, the wood inside your walls, and inside the attic.
When a termite colony infests a home, it can take as little as three years for noticeable damage to occur. Of course, the rate of damage depends on the size of the colony. If the colony is large enough, it can destroy the wood components of your home within a period of eight years.
In addition to wood inside the home, termites are drawn inside by moisture, wood in contact with house foundations, and cracks in building exteriors. Different combinations of these factors attract different species. Additionally, geographic location plays a role in how likely homeowners are to deal with infestations.

If a termite infestation is left untreated, it could literally bring your house down. The good news is termite signs can be easy to spot once you know what you are looking for. Spotting a problem early on will make it easier to get the proper termite extermination your home needs.
